Responsive Website Design (RWD) and Google's mobile friendly test

We're delighted to welcome Laurence to the team, who has joined as an apprentice at the beginning of the month. He is currently working with our Managing Director on a project for Jolly Roger Limited. The project will provide them with a sales order processing system that helps manage their sales orders and stock management. The online database application is being developed using the latest version of our code base - Golem - that is now fully responsive, enabling users to access system via a variety of different devices, including laptops, tablets and smart phones.

Responsive Website Design (RWD) has been thrown into the spot light after Google announced changes to its algorithms in April. As a result, businesses have been forced to ensure their websites are considered mobile friendly, or risk loosing their Search Engine Result Page (SERP)s.

We've updated both our websites - and - to ensure that our websites meet Google's criteria. We launched in 2012 to mark our tenth birthday using HTML5 / CSS3 so it only needed a couple of tweaks to pass Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. Our main website - - was designed in 2009 and uses older technologies, but we were suprised at how easy it was to tweak the site to comply with the mobile friendly test. We've seen headline grabbing emails scaring businesses about "mobilegeddon" which suggest businesses need to throw away their website and start again! This simply isn't the case, although it wouldn't hurt for some businesses to give their website a bit of attention.

What's really disappointing is to see some people, who have recently had their websites redesigned (over the last twelve months) realise that their sites don't pass Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. It highlights the need for web design businesses to stay abreast of new developments within the sector.

We' continuing to work on two large projects for other clients; the first is a Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) system for an ear protection business and the second is a coaching platform for a business in London. Both of these are again using an updated version of our code base that we're updating with the introduction of a new integration class that will make it easier than ever to plug in third party accounting software like SageLine50 and QuickBooks.

We're looking to continue the expansion of the development team to meet demand, with a health sales pipeline and projects scheduled through to the end of the year. It's an exciting time at Ayrmer Software and we're proud of wat we have achieved over the last thirteen years. Having moved up to Wiltshire 18 months, we feel part of the local business community now and are well and truly settled in our new home, with some fantastic attractions on our doorstep!
